Thursday 9th February – Ski **** La Molina, Spain – Sun not a cloud in the sky and light winds :)

5 hours out covering 29.77 miles with a top speed of 40.19 kts

Woke to -5 degrees outside but wall to wall sunshine and more important the strong wind had gone :) We were not in any hurry to get on the slopes as we wanted them to soften up a little. So, we read, had breakfast sorted ski stuff out and headed down to telecabin ticket office only a short walk away at 10.18 with picnic packed. The army were here in force again today along with several buses bringing up groups of school kids. After a bit of a hic-up when we thought the ticket office was closed then it taking ages to accept our credit card (78 Euros for 4 hours) we went up on the Telecabina La Molina. This took us high up with stunning views of snowy topped mountains all around with this being the first time we have ever skied in Spain. Things were looking perfect, wall to wall sunshine, well-groomed pistes and quiet. It didn’t quite turn out that good:(
It was a short run down to the Set Fonts button which took you just short of the top which is La Tosa (2537m) it was then a really long run back including a hard red (Comabella) ending in an easier blue finishing with a green to the Cap de Comella chair lift. This linked you to three lifts which covered a large area including runs down to Roc Blanc and Alabau unfortunately the only way down there was steep reds and because they were north facing it was very icy and all but unskiable for us, absolutely no fun at all, just survival. I managed a little better than Mag only because of my longer skies, short blades are useless on icy pistes:( You need some nice sharp edged longer piste skies to make the most of skiing this early in the season, we prefer March when the pistes soften up after lunch so you can have four hours up on the first lift at 9!
Still it wasn’t all bad and we found some better pistes especially around the Torrent Neige lift but we made the mistake of skiing across the nice La Geciana blue and ended up having to ski down the horrendous Alabau red with Mag falling several metres on her back, not much fun but at least she didn’t hurt herself! We had had enough of this side and with under an hour left on our pass we headed back to the telecabin. This involved heading up the slow Torrent Neige one last time turning right to the start of another really long run down with nearly all good snow for a chang. Starting with the Carena red, leading to the top Volta Muntanya Sagrada green, a narrow run through a gorge which was fantastic apart from it was busy with crazy kids flying down but we made it safely to the bottom.
We had just enough time to get up the telecabin and button then found a lovely spot just down the difficult red (which was in actual fact the best and easiest pistes we did today even though it said ‘experts only’ at the top!) to a rock Cairn a short walk up with stunning views all round for our well-deserved picnic. Rested we headed down the great green to the bottom completely shattered, I had aching legs and back, I don’t think we would ever want to have a week’s skiing, too knackering and expensive, we prefer the snowshoeing.
Back at the van some plonker of a Spanish coach driver had parked beside us with his engine running which rather spoiled our cuppa and cake!
Still shouldn’t complain too much as this was the best weather of our time away, special blue skiing sky, stunning mountain views just let down by the icy snow. With better snow this would be a great resort! So, 5-star weather and 2-star snow I will give it 4 stars.
Had some rather manky Toulouse sausages for tea and rang my Dad
